Blogger Ian August looks at an environmental disaster in Tennessee a year after a billion gallons of toxic sludge enveloped a small community.

Coal is the single greatest threat to civilization and all life on our planet.
 – James Hansen, NASA's top climate scientist

One year ago today, a small town in Tennessee experienced the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States when over 1 billion gallons of toxic sludge burst through a retaining wall and flooded 300 acres of land, including the Emory River that supplies fresh drinking water to the area. The estimated cost of cleanup, not including lawsuits, is over 1 billion dollars, and after a year, crews are still working.

The most interesting, iconic, and misunderstood of facial hair is raising money for children with cancer. Will you answer the call and grow a ‘stache?

Since the invention of shaving, one style of facial hair has eclipsed all others. From the waxed handle bar of Salvador Dali, to the rugged walrus of Tom Selleck, to the nose neighbor of Ned Flanders, mustaches are a cultural icon of masculinity. Now, the unrivaled power of upper lip follicle growth has been harnessed for the betterment of society though an organization known simply as Mustaches for Kids.

Mustaches for Kids is a brotherhood of volunteers who raise money for various children’s charities. With dozens of chapters throughout North America, M4K has raised nearly one million dollars for a variety of children’s groups. Each charity must be for the benefit of children. Mustaches for Kids started in Los Angeles in 1999. Its mission was simple: Have fun and do good. In the subsequent ten years, thousands of volunteers, or growers, have taken part to make the world a little better, if not a little hairier.

In its first social action event, the VM team goes above and beyond its goal.

Speak up. Stop the stigma. Save lives.

The Vigilant Monkey recently raised over $1,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Long Island, NY, held at Old Westbury Gardens. It was an amazing, moving, and uplifting day that gave everyone in attendance a chance to honor the memory of loved ones lost and celebrate the work of the AFSP and those who have donated their time, money, and support.

The majority of us, if not all who read this, spend a great deal of their day on the endless cement network of highways, back roads, main streets, parkways, and parking lots. Regardless of whether or not we’re in the most mundane of family shuttles or face-melting speed machines, there is always, at some point, the inescapable sense of confinement. Traffic, road work, or even the errant deer will throw a monkey wrench in the transport system, immediately awakening the reality that ultimately, we’re no more free to roam than a slot car on the living room floor.

It runs on the Android OS and all things Google, but are the Droid’s definite strengths enough to rival the likes of the iPhone?

It’s been awhile since I posted, but I promise I have a good reason. It’s called the holidays and working in retail makes them crazy! With the kinds of customers out there and the amount of money changing hands, it’s almost impossible to do things that YOU want to do during that period of time.

The good news, though, is that I finally got to do something that I’ve been wanting to: a review of Verizon and Motorola’s attempt at the iPhone killer, the Droid. I will say that it’s a good try, but no cigar. And to preface this, while I am an iPhone owner, I do look at each device I test as objectively as possible. Any sort of bias on my part would be unfair to you. So, with that said, let’s proceed…

Is the onset of winter weather reducing your car to mere transport? We might just have something to help you get by…

We have all found ways to satiate our car lust in the interim time that our supercar of choice is unavailable. Whether it’s a hot wheel collection, a magazine, or oft-visited website (made up of handsome, exciting, and popular contributors), our greatest automotive fantasies are constructed with the materials available to us. Being just shy of 30 (Renew!), I’m fortunate enough to have been a part of the generation that grew up on the magical device that allows us to vicariously experience our wildest fantasies from the comfort of our living room: the home video game console.
